Pooya Badkoobeh, Director of “Dressage” who is present in Istanbul due to the International Crime And Punishment Film Festival (icapff), opened up in an interview with Anadolu Agency about the causes of the recent success of Iranian Cinema in a global scale: “Iran’s Cinema is proceeding very strongly in the terms of expressing human issues and realism. Often the concerns raised in this Cinema, are global”.
Having started his job making promotional teasers in TV, he added:
“These things are happening lately. In the past, only a few directors were able to succeed like this, only once every decade or even two decades. In the past few years, Mr. Asghar Farhadi has succeeded a lot. I believe this is not only because of the plot lines. We still have some weaknesses in this field. This is one of the weak points of the Iranian Cinema”.
“It took two years for Hamed Rajabi to finish the script writing of Dressage, My first movie. Before that, I was a Commercial director. My father is a producer and I grew up in this atmosphere. I also have two short films in my resume. One of them is “upstairs neighbor” which won a few awards in international festivals as well” added this young director about his resume.
“This movie was first screened in Berlin festival, we got the Special Jury Prize in Generation, which included a collection of movies about teenagers. After that, the movie was chosen in the best first-time director section in Fajr Festival. Also, in Shanghai festival, Ms. Negar Moghadam won the award for new Asian talent. In the Persian film festival in Australia, we won the annual golden gazelle.” Badkoobeh added about the international success of the movie.
– The high standards of Turkish cinema, provide a convenient opportunity for making joint productions.
“In the meetings I had here with the producers, we also talked about joint projects. I also heard that Mr. Peyman Maadi, my friend and one of the outstanding actors and directors in Iran, is working on one of these projects.” He said about having common products.
“Due to the cultural similarities and proximity of the two countries, the production cost is appropriate and also standards are high and facilities are proper and most importantly more than 360 thousand Iranians live here. So, there are good opportunities for these kinds of projects. We can say that some of the Iranian Youth is aiming to migrate because of these facilities. I would be thrilled to see a strong bond between Iranian and Turkish cinema in cultural and commercial segments. I believe there is so much potential here we can use in the years to come”.
– I’m a serious fan of the Turkish Cinema
“I like the Turkish Cinema a lot. Nuri bilge Ceylan and Fatih Akin are among my favorites. However, I’m not a fan of today’s Turkish Series although they are very popular in my country. With women being their main fan base. I’m a serious fan of the Turkish Cinema” He added about his interest in the Turkish Cinema.
“Despite going through its eighth year, icapff is still considered a young festival. However after the screening, a lot of academic and beautiful questions were asked. The bond between cinema and the academia is a very important, Unprecedented thing. The beginning of this path is great. After the screening of Dressage in different countries, questions were asked about the similarities between family issues all around the world. I believe when people sympathize, stories become more believable and that’s what makes a movie successful” He added.
